What is a tequila sour made of?

A sour cocktail is typically made up of 3 ingredients:

  1. A base liquor
  2. A tart citrus
  3. A sweetener

Most often, egg white is also added to create a creamier texture which pairs beautifully with the tart and zest citrus.

So to make a honeydew tequila sour, tequila acts as the base liquor with a little extra flavor boost of melon liqueur. Lime is the citrus of choice here as it pairs best with tequila, and then agave and fresh honeydew create all the sweetness and flavor.

How to pick a ripe honeydew melon

To get the most flavor out of this cocktail, it’s important to use a really sweet and ripe honeydew melon. Here’s how to pick the right one:

  1. Look for the smallest “melon belly button” which is the tiny indent opposite the stem side. The smaller the belly button, the longer that melon has sat and ripened.
  2. Next, look to see if there is a white/yellowish spot on the melon. This shows that the melon has sat in one spot for a while, developing even more flavor.
  3. Last, check the weight. Feel it in your hands and if it feels heavier than it appears, that’s the one!

Cocktail ingredient breakdown:

  1. Blanco Tequila – This the clear, unaged tequila also known as silver or plata. It has a more mellow flavor which doesn’t overpower the sweet melon flavor of this cocktail. My personal favorite is Espolon as it’s very accessible and is one of the rare affordable tequilas that doesn’t have an off-putting artificial vanilla flavor.
  2. Melon Liqueur – To boost the melon flavor, a bit of melon liqueur is added. Its vibrant green color also accentuates the honeydew melon. I used Midori, but any melon liqueur will work!
  3. Lime Juice – Make sure you use fresh lime juice! The bottled stuff often tastes a little funky – like cleaner. Fresh lime with provide pure lime flavor.
  4. Agave – Just a tiny bit is all that’s needed to punch up the sweetness.
  5. Honeydew Puree – Part of a sweet honeydew is blended and strained to create a delicious puree. Frozen and thawed honeydew will also work for this!
  6. Egg White – A large egg white adds a creamy and frothy note to this cocktail. If you’re a little iffy on adding raw egg to your cocktail, replace with 1 oz of aquafaba which is the liquid from a can of chickpeas.

Mocktail option

To make this into a mocktail, substitute the tequila with a zero proof alternative. I like the Ritual tequila alternative.

Then, omit the melon liqueur and replace with 1 oz of more honeydew puree.

If you also would like to replace the egg white, simply use 1 oz of aquafaba instead. This is the liquid from a can of chickpeas.
