Before You Start

These rice krispie treats are so incredibly easy to make, as they should be, but do require a few really simple tips to ensure you have the absolute best results!

  1. Measuring – When measuring out the rice cereal and strawberries, make sure to fill level scoops. If you use heaping scoops, these treats will turn out a bit too dry. However, measure heaping cups for the pretzels as two heaping cups of while pretzels will provide 1 1/2 cups of crushed pretzels.
  2. Roasted Pretzels – When tossing the uncooked mix, I like to throw in a couple extra whole pretzels that can be used for decoration on top. It’s also very easy to over roast and burn the pretzels, so keep an eye on them around the 8 minute mark and then add on 1-2 extra minutes as needed.
  3. Whole Marshmallows – One extra cup of marshmallows is added to the dry mix. While they don’t melt along with the rest of the marshmallows, the warmth of the mixture will soften them into ooey gooey pockets of marshmallow. I left this as an option step as it does require a whole extra bag of marshmallows, but it’s definitely worth it!
  4. Buttered Dish – Make sure to fully and thoroughly butter in the inside of an 8×8 dish before pressing in these treats. Since these are so ooey gooey, they can easily stick to the pan. If you’d like some extra insurance, butter the pan, lay in a sheet of parchment paper, and then butter the top of the paper before pressing in the strawberry rice krispie treat mix.

How to Make The BEST Strawberry Marshmallow Treats

While marshmallow treats are simple to make, there’s an art to creating the most perfect pillowy treats.

First, the ratio of marshmallow to cereal has to be just right. To make room for the delicious freeze dried strawberries and roasted pretzels, I reduced some of the cereal. Otherwise, 10 oz of marshmallows to 4 1/2 cups of cereal is the perfect amount.

Next, try to move fast for each step. Once the butter and marshmallow are melted, immediately remove from heat and mix in the vanilla and salt. Then quickly mix in the dry ingredients and dump and press right into the pan.

Marshmallow treats are the easiest to work with when they’re fresh and warm, so moving quickly creates the best treats.

While this final step is preference, I like a more packed in marshmallow treat. Especially in this case since there’s chunks of pretzel and strawberry involved. A tighter pack will lead to more uniform slices.

Yes! Just use gluten free pretzels and gluten free rice cereal. Classic rice krispies cereal contains malt flavoring which isn’t gluten free, so make sure to go for one that is certified gluten free.

It absolutely is. Just double all ingredients and press into a 9×13 baking dish.

I don’t suggest this as dried strawberries tend to be really chewy so slicing and biting into these treats would be difficult.

Ingredients

Roasted Pretzels

  • 2 heaping cups pretzels, regular or gluten free
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

Strawberry Pretzel Marshmallow Treats

  • 1/2 cup (112g) unsalted butter + more for coating
  • 1 10oz bag mini marshmallows + 1 additional cup (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 1/2 cups (75g) crispy rice cereal, use gluten free if needed
  • 3/4 cup (18g) freeze dried strawberries, roughly crushed
  • Roasted pretzels

Instructions

Roasted Pretzels

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Place the pretzels in a ziplock bag and crush using a rolling pin or similar blunt object.
  3. Transfer to a bowl and mix with melted butter and sugar.
  4. Spread the pretzels on the baking pan and bake for 8-10 minutes or until they turn a deep golden color.
  5. When they’re fresh from the oven, toss on the baking sheet to ensure the pretzels are still evenly coated in the butter. They’ll appear wet at first, but will harden and crisp up as they cool.

Strawberry Pretzel Marshmallow Treats

  1. Butter the entire inside of an 8×8 baking pan and set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cereal, strawberries, pretzels, and extra 1 cup of marshmallows if using.
  3. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter and 10 oz of marshmallows.
  4. Once smooth and melted, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and salt.

  6. Scoop the marshmallow treat mix into the baking pan and press tight and even. It helps to spritz your hands with some nonstick spray and then pat everything smooth.

  1. These were a hit with my friends! Super simple to make but such a delicious elevated rice krispie treat. One of my friends said it tasted like strawberry jello pretzel salad as soon as she took a bite – this recipe nailed that flavor! Will definitely make again.

  2. I have never ventured past traditional rice krispies and I’m glad I did. Such a treat and easy to make. I used vegan marshmallows, they take much longer to melt and require more stirring to break them down but if you stick with it they work just fine.

  3. These are SO GOOD! I always love a variation on Rice Krispies Treats and these did not disappoint. I doubled the recipe and took them to a birthday party today and they were gone in minutes. We will definitely make these again!
