Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita
This spicy passion fruit margarita is the perfect summer cocktail! Made with some fresh jalapeño and passion fruit puree, it’s the perfect balance of spicy and sweet. A mocktail version is also included in the recipe notes!
Passion Fruit Margarita
Passion fruit has such a sweet and refreshing flavor that’s just begging to be in a margarita.
If you’ve never tried passion fruit, it’s a good flavor cross between the sweet creaminess of mango and the citrus notes in pineapple. Its outer shell has a very deep purple color but inside is a bright yellow filled with crunchy seeds.
While the seeds are edible, the yellow pulp contains all the sweet flavor.
For this margarita recipe, fresh passion fruit can be used but it takes quite a few passion fruits to squeeze out enough juice for one cocktail.
So instead, frozen passion fruit is thawed and strained or blended to a smooth puree consistency. This puree is what creates the beautiful golden color in this margarita.
How to Make a Spicy Margarita
The bit of spice in this cocktail comes from two ingredients:
- Fresh Jalapeño
- Tajin Rim
Jalapeño is sliced into 1/8 thick rounds and two slices are muddled into the cocktail. If you prefer a mild spice, only use slices with zero or very few seeds. If you like a lot of spice, choose slices with more seeds. This is muddled with fresh lime juice and agave to help open up that jalapeño flavor.
Tajin is added to the rim of the cocktail to enhance the spice. While Tajin isn’t inherently spicy, it does add a lot of spice flavor to the cocktail.
Tequila for Passion Fruit Margarita
This margarita can be made with any tequila of your choosing, although a blanco tequila or mezcal would work best.
If you’re in need of a recommendation, I really love Espolon Blanco Tequila and Madre Mezcal. Both have a very clean flavor because they don’t contain any additives…which I will never know why some brands add a vanilla flavor when tequila tastes so good on its own!
Passion Fruit Alternatives
Passion fruit is typically available all year round, but it can sometimes be tricky to find. If you can’t get your hands on fresh or frozen passion fruit, mango is the next best option.
For a different flavor but equally tasty margarita, pineapple juice is another great option.
It’s very similar in flavor and color so you’ll still get the same look and taste! But steer clear of passion fruit juice as this is a fairly clear liquid with a watered down flavor.

Ingredients
Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita
- 2 jalapeño slices (about ⅛” thick)
- 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/4 oz agave nectar
- 1 1/2 oz blanco tequila or mezcal
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur
- 2 oz passion fruit puree *SEE NOTES
- Tajin, for the rim
Instructions
Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita
- To a shaker, add the jalapeño slices (with as few or as many seeds so you prefer), lime juice, and agave. Use a muddler or the bottom of a wooden spoon to mash the jalapeño to release more flavor.
- Now add the remaining ingredients along with ice and shake for about 30 seconds.
- Use a discarded lime wedge to line the rim of a cocktail glass. Then place the glass upside down in some Tajin to coat the rim. Fill with ice.
- Strain the cocktail into the glass and garnish to your liking. Enjoy!
Notes
*PASSION FRUIT PUREE – While fresh passion fruit can be used, it takes at last 4 to produce 2 oz of puree. So instead, I used frozen passion fruit. Once thawed it turns liquid. I suggest running it through a food processor to smooth out any pulp, or simply run through a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp. If you can’t get your hands on frozen passion fruit or bottled passion fruit puree, mango juice is a great option as it’s much more accessible but yields a similar flavor. Alternatively, I do not suggest using passion fruit juice as this is a clear liquid that will not produce the same look.
MOCKTAIL – Replace the tequila with a zero proof option or a citrus seltzer. Then replace the orange liqueur with fresh squeezed orange juice.
