Halloween Snack Mix FAQs

Since this is such a simple recipe, we’re getting right to the point! Here’s everything you need to know about this Halloween snack mix recipe.

Can this snack mix be made gluten free?

Absolutely! Just use gluten free Oreo cookies. Rice chex cereal is already naturally gluten free.

Can this snack mix be made dairy free?

Yes! Just use dairy free semisweet chocolate chips and dairy free white chocolate in place of the candy melts. You can use white chocolate chips if you can’t find dairy free white chocolate bars.

What can I use in place of the orange candy melts?

White chocolate also works! Just use chopped white chocolate bars instead of white chocolate chips because the bars melt easier. If you’d like to add color, melt the chocolate then mix in an oil-based orange food coloring.

Can I use a different cereal?

Sure! As long as it’s equal to the same amounts used in this recipe. I think chocolate or peanut butter Chex would be delicious here.

How long can this Halloween snack mix sit out?

You can keep it out at room temperature for a day – perfect to just keep on a platter for everyone to snack on.

How do you store cookies and cream snack mix?

Once the mix has set and hardened, store in a container or ziplock bag at room temperature.

What other mix-ins can I add?

I added more chopped cookies and some Halloween peanut M&Ms, but I also like Reese’s Pieces, regular Halloween M&Ms, festive sprinkles, or candy corn would work great in here.

Description

This simple Halloween snack mix is great for your Halloween party! It’s so quick to make but is perfectly festive. Made similar to puppy chow, the cereal is coated in chocolate but tossed in a mixture of powdered sugar and crushed Oreo cookies. It’s dangerously addicting!

Ingredients

  • 12 Halloween Oreo cookies (or GF Oreos), divided
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, divided
  • 6 cups chex cereal, dividedย
  • 1 cup orange candy melts
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tsp coconut oil, divided
  • 1 cup Halloween M&Ms (optional)

Instructions

  1. First, grind 6 Oreos in a food processor. Now in one large ziplock bag, add 1/4 cup of the ground Oreos and 1/4 cup of powdered sugar. Zip and shake. Use this for the orange coating.
  2. In a separate large ziplock bag, add the remaining Oreo (no need to measure), and remaining ยผ cup of powdered sugar. Shake and use for the chocolate coating.
  3. In a large bowl, add 3 cups of chex mix. Now in a small heat-safe dish or measuring glass, melt the orange candy melts with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil in the microwave. Heat in 30 second intervals until smooth (about 90 seconds total).ย
  4. Pour over the chex and carefully stir to coat. Add the coated cereal to the designated ziplock bag and shake to coat. Pour the cereal onto a large tray covered in parchment paper.
  5. Now add the other 3 cups of cereal to that same bowl (no need to clean it). Repeat this same process but now with the semisweet chocolate chips.
  6. Scatter the chocolate cereal with the orange cereal. Chop the remaining Oreo cookies and toss on top of the mix. Sprinkle the M&Ms if desired. Allow to cool and set, then dig in!
