From the Author

When I created Butternut Bakery, I picked up my very first camera and made it my mission to learn every single thing I could about food photography. Through the process, not only has my photography completely transformed, but I’ve gained a passion for this new found skill. I’ve learned that having the ability to translate the textures and flavors of my desserts is just as important as creating a delicious recipe, allowing my brand to stand out and grow at a rate I could have never imagined.

Now I’ve made it my new mission to share this passion, as it’s an invaluable skill that can have a profound impact on your blog, website, or business. All of my tips and tricks can be found in this ebook, helping to elevate your photos and create mouth-watering images.

The Importance of Food Photography

Although you may have the most delicious recipes, they will likely not gain the attention they deserve without eye-catching photos. Because in the world of search and social media, the decision to make one recipe from another is based almost entirely on which photos look the tastiest. The texture, the consistency, the shine, everything must be highlighted in such a way for the photos to easily convey exactly what the consumer can expect. This is why food photography is such an important skill to have. It not only helps your recipes stand out but it also draws more readers to your brand, helping to grow your audience and business.

What’s Inside

Starting at square one, I’m teaching you exactly what to look for in both a camera and a lens. This knowledge will allow you to choose your own gear that fits your needs, or potentially upgrade your current kit.

You can now have confidence in operating your camera in manual mode as I teach you how and when to use certain settings in order to take crisp, high-quality photos.

Understanding lighting is a major piece in mastering food photography. In this section, you’ll learn about natural lighting – how to choose your light source, when is the best time to shoot, how to manipulate your light source, and so much more.

Learn how to arrange your food in such a way that makes your photos both beautiful and easy to look at. Here, I teach you the composition principles every photographer should know.

Knowing what to look for can be overwhelming, so I’m breaking things down into easy-to-follow sections that will help you understand exactly what kind of props you need.

This section covers everything I’ve learned about how to capture the textures of food. From drippy, to gooey, to melty, and all my other favorite adjectives.

Editing is just as important as knowing how to take the photos. I’m walking you through step-by-step on how I edit my photos, as well as teaching you what each setting means so that you too can create your own style.

Whether you choose to shoot with natural or artificial lighting, this book has you covered. I go over how to make artificial lighting look natural, and what type of gear to look for.

Artificial Lighting
for Food Photography

I love shooting with both natural and artificial lighting for my food photography, and the book touches on both topics. For the exact gear I use, I’ve created a post all about my artificial lighting set up.
