From the Author

When I created Butternut Bakery, I picked up my very first camera and made it my mission to learn every single thing I could about food photography. Through the process, not only has my photography completely transformed, but I’ve gained a passion for this new found skill. I’ve learned that having the ability to translate the textures and flavors of my desserts is just as important as creating a delicious recipe, allowing my brand to stand out and grow at a rate I could have never imagined.

The Importance of Food Photography

Although you may have the most delicious recipes, they will likely not gain the attention they deserve without eye-catching photos. Because in the world of search and social media, the decision to make one recipe from another is based almost entirely on which photos look the tastiest. The texture, the consistency, the shine, everything must be highlighted in such a way for the photos to easily convey exactly what the consumer can expect. This is why food photography is such an important skill to have. It not only helps your recipes stand out but it also draws more readers to your brand, helping to grow your audience and business.

What’s Inside

I officially started Butternut Baker back in 2018, after sharing all of my content on Instagram for a few months. I gained so many requests for the actual recipes that I decided to start a blog, so now here we are.

I grew up on box cake mixes and easy bake ovens, but it wasn’t until high school when I started to experiment with creating my own recipes from scratch and since then, I haven’t stopped baking. Everything I’ve learned has come from years of trial and error.

Yes, all of the food photography you see here is done by me. But unlike baking, I haven’t always had a love for photography. It wasn’t until I started the blog that I became obsessed with the photography process, and it’s something I’m equally passionate about as I am with baking.

I actually use two different cameras and lenses. Click here for a full write up on all of the gear I use in my photos!

Yes! I only collaborate with brands I know and love. Past and current partnerships include Bob’s Red MillDanish Creamery, and Fleischmann’s Yeast. If you’re interested in working together, feel free to send an email to myself (jenna@butternutbakeryblog.com) and my manager (maddy@mpactgroupla.com) for more info.

Artificial Lighting for Food Photography

I love shooting with both natural and artificial lighting for my food photography, and the book touches on both topics. For the exact gear I use, I’ve created a post all about my artificial lighting set up.

My Food Photography Gear

While the book teaches you all about how to pick out the best camera for your specific needs, I’ve also shared what camera, lens, and additional equipment I use in a post here on my website.
